The Trade Show: Marketing to the World

By Peggy Sparks and Tony J. Sirvello III

When a company exhibits its products at a trade show, it reaps advantages far beyond the obvious one of having a target audience at its 'front door.'; In fact, trade shows offer a range of benefits:

  • Checking out the competition: Trade shows are where companies reveal their newest lines. Being there allows you to scope out the product or service, their marketing plan, and consumer reaction to both.
  • Educating prospective clients: Since your target clients are the invited attendees, trade shows give you the opportunity to educate prospective clients about the usefulness of your new (or existing) products. Often delegates have no idea (or only a vague idea) of what they want, and they attend a trade show for the specific purpose of learning about their options from vendors. It is your opportunity to demonstrate to prospective clients the reach of your global coverage, the speed of your service, or the efficiency of your operations. If you have what they are looking for, it's a golden opportunity.
  • One-stop selling: Trade shows offer a financial advantage in that you can display your product to an important segment of your market without having to travel to the home countries of all attendees. Trade shows also offer one-stop shopping to delegates, and often the vendor exhibits are one of the biggest reasons they attend a conference.
  • Networking with other exhibitors: Apart from the benefits of learning from your peers, many companies have forged long-lasting relationships with other vendors that have led to profitable relationships like licensing their products for sale by that company in another geographic market. Are you headquartered in Europe? A trade show might show you if there is a market in the United States for your product. In other instances, companies have eventually sold their business to former fellow exhibitors.

If you have been hesitant to participate in a trade show that draws your target audience, consider the many benefits of attending and showcasing your product. Participating in an international trade show can open doors for you that you have not considered before. It could lead to representation for your products in untapped markets. Go trade show, go global!

IACREOT

The International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials, and Treasurers, or IACREOT, was founded in 1971 by a small group of government officials who wanted more opportunities to network with their fellow professionals. In doing so, they created a forum in which elected and appointed officials (and their staffs) could share ideas and work together to effect change at all levels of government.

Today, IACREOT has more than 1,500 members who represent all levels of government. International members include citizens of Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia, Nigeria, and Albania. IACREOT provides its members with professional resources so that citizens in their respective jurisdictions are served by officials with the highest degree of professionalism.

IACREOT hosts an annual conference each summer (in a location chosen by vote of attendees at the previous conference), which includes a trade show. The annual conference offers its delegates educational opportunities through division seminars and topics of general interest to government officials.

IACREOT's trade show

In over 35 years, IACREOT's trade show has evolved from a small operation with limited attendance to the state-of-the-art trade show that it is today. From year to year, our international and U.S. vendors return to offer our delegates a different perspective on technology and networking on matters of mutual interest. IACREOT does its best to accommodate exhibitors' requests and even offers them corporate membership options, which qualify their companies for reduced booth fees and advertising in the IACREOT News.

Election officials make up the largest number of attendees at an IACREOT conference. These officials are looking for solutions to the complex issues they face when holding elections in their jurisdictions. They also are the officials from their offices that have the power to purchase should they find the right solution. IACREOT sets its trade show as a centerpiece of its conference. The trade show opens with a Grand Opening Social Hour during which delegates can interact with exhibitors and begin to get to know what they have to offer. During the two days that the trade show is open, delegates have many opportunities for more focused, one-on-one time with vendors of their choice during continental breakfasts, breaks, a scheduled luncheon, and even a seminar offering time alone in the trade show.

Trade shows allow the ultimate exhibitor-delegate connections. The benefits to the vendor and delegate are the same: one-stop shopping at its best. Shouldn't your company be present at our next conference to display your products and solutions to our election official attendees?
